The Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival is one of Durham’s richest traditional festivals, and it takes place each year in mid May. The first ever Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival took place at Dukes Gardens in 1969, when a group of African American students discovered the need for a cultural arts festival for the residents of Durham. Over the years, this event has evolved tremendously due to increased community involvements and sponsorships. Today, the tradition continues with live music performances, arts and crafts workshops, authentic cuisine and hands-on family activities.
The Beaver Queen Pageant is a decades-old tradition in Wanchese, NC. It’s a fun-loving annual pageant to crown a Miss Teenage Wanchese Beaver or Miss Beaver Queen and other titles. The first runner-up is called First Bitten and wears a bite bandage on her nose.
